31 SAINT-GOBAIN BUILDING GLASS The new center of the university city of Groningen is a «cultural department store». The building was designed by NL Architects and was opened in autumn 2019. The monumental construction offers a completely newmixture of cultural activities of libraries, cinemas and museums. With the expressive shape and the imposing volume of the Groninger Forum, the city center receives a new impetus. In spite of the exceptional cubature the sharp-edged monolith, with its height of 45 meters, fits surprisingly well in its surroundings. For this it was awarded the renowned Dutch architecture prize of the «Branchevereniging Nederlandse Architectenbureaus» (BNA) as «Best Building of the Year 2020». The Forum is characterized by a central space, a unique atrium. The heart of the building is a spatial «interface» that connects all facilities and promotes the confrontation of opinions and the exchange of knowledge and ideas. Like a vertical urban district, it stacks public squares and private spaces over an area of 17,000 m 2 .
