GLASS FOR FAÇADE 2021

10 1 GLASS FOR FAÇADE EDITION 2021 GLASS FOR FAÇADE EDITION 2021 35 years ago, Norwegian architect Niels Torp designed the headquarters of airline SAS in the north of Stockholm for 2,000 employees. The building, located in a park near Haga Castle, was meant to look like an airport. The departments were virtually arranged in «terminals», which are connected by a glazed atrium. The highly modern «street» was designed as a winter garden but was not considered attractive – uncoated DGU glass meant it was too cold in winter and too hot in summer. And there were water leakage problems; the ill fate of the atrium became publicly known and meant similar constructions were avoided in Sweden for several years to come. During the refurbishment of the huge complex, the glazing had to be completely replaced to meet requirements for thermal and visual comfort of a co-working space, 2,000 m 2 of dining area and meeting places have been created in the former deserted winter garden. The demands were strict – no change in the appearance of the glass or system was allowed, and many glazings were rejected. SAINT-GOBAIN supplied the new solar control glass for the 3,500 m 2 of double glazing. The highly selective COOL-LITE® XTREME 70/33 II coating on extra- white DIAMANT® glass was selected as the best match between looks and thermal comfort. The aluminium system was also completely replaced to secure the construction against leakage.
