4 5 GLASS FOR FAÇADE EDITION 2021 GLASS FOR FAÇADE EDITION 2021 Named after its distinctive staircase on the north side, the Spine is located in the heart of Liverpool’s innovative Knowledge Quarter. The new headquarters of the well-known Royal College of Physicians represents the harbour city’s modern urban development and provides a strong contrast to the historic industrial architecture. The building is BREEAM Excellent certified and is one of the first in the UK to gain the international Well standard. Liverpool’s new flagship building is also groundbreaking for a new archetype of biophilic office buildings. One highlight is the curtain wall glass façade. Almost 23millionmathematical Voronoi diagrams are printed to the glass surface with «PICTUREit®» by SAINT-GOBAIN. In this case, the glass is printed with enamels, and burnt at high temperature. Therefore, the print becomes extremely resistant to moisture, water, temperature fluctuations, scratches, abrasion and even UV discolouration. As a biophilic design element, the printed polygons create constantly changing shadow patterns inside the building, while contributing efficiently to sun protection. AHR Design, Liverpool, believes that the built environment strengthens the mind, supports productivity and even improves fitness. Fully glazed on all sides, the façade sets the highest standards for controlled light transmission and energy values. With a light transmission of 50%, the selected COOL-LITE® XTREME 50/22 II ensures excellent light values for working and relaxing areas. The good solar factor (g-value) results in low cooling loads and the low Ug- value reduces the heating costs.
