Constructing a Sustainable Future #3

Europe on the road to more sustainable construction The transformation of the construction sector towards greater sustainability represents both a major challenge and a tremendous opportunity for innovation in Europe. With a new European Parliament in office for five years (2024-2029), the Secretary General of Efficient Buildings Europe, Adrian Joyce, believes the European Union is on the right track but could go even further. “The European Union already has a leadership role in sustainable construction. It has implemented key actions in this area, including the Level(s) Framework, which offers a unified approach for assessing and reporting the sustainability performance of buildings, or the inclusion of requirements for Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) and Whole Life Carbon (WLC). This experience must now be shared with other regions of the world. Yet the EU can go further: we must continue to decarbonize industrial processes involved in producing and manufacturing building materials and products. Additionally, it is essential to increase the recovery of materials in the sector, particularly during the deconstruction or demolition of buildings. Finally, it is crucial to ensure that reporting templates for sustainable construction are harmonized from the outset, with particular focus on whole life carbon reporting.” READ the full interview in Constructing a sustainable future POINT OF VIEW 100
