INDIA Transforming slums: from policy to action SANJAYNAGAR SLUM IN AHMEDNAGAR. In addition to philanthropic donations and direct contributions from local residents, who have played a key role in the redevelopment of the Sanjaynagar slum, the project has benefited from the Indian Government’s Housing for All welfare program (PMAY-Urban). This is a proactive policy aimed at providing permanent housing for all homeless or precariously housed families. To ensure that the project meets the needs of the community, Mumbai based Community Design Agency (CDA) collaborated with slum residents to transform their neighborhood into a dignified and vibrant living space. Organized as a cooperative, the inhabitants of the first 33 housing units delivered in February 2022 were involved in construction choices and now actively participate in the operation and maintenance of their building. Similar participatory mechanisms will be implemented for the construction of 7 remaining buildings, ensuring better alignment between initial design and the project’s usage realities over time. © Rajesh Vora
