Taking sustainable living to the social level Giulio Ferrini leads the built environment program at the Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB), a think-tank that promotes responsible business practices. He shares three examples of policies that can make sustainable housing more accessible. “The Austrian model: operators’ profits for housing are capped by a system based on costs, not profit maximization. This market represents a quarter of the sector. The initiative in the Flemish region of Belgium: rent increases are indexed to inflation and energy performance: freeze for E/F-rated homes, half inflation for C/D-rated homes, full inflation for better-rated homes, thus encouraging renovation.
