BHUTAN Technology meets Bhutanese tradition GELEPHU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Blending traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship with modern innovation, the future airport features a modular diagonal lattice structure, made from glue-laminated timber and decorated with painted sculptures. This project is being presented at the 2025 Venice Biennale of Architecture with the title “Ancient Future”. The structure is made from local, sustainable timber, embellished with traditional Bhutanese carvings by local craftsmen, celebrating the heritage of woodcarving in Bhutan while exploring the role of technology in the preservation and evolution of this craft. The airport rests on independent, modular timber frames, making it easy to dismantle and extend. Its roof is fitted with photovoltaic panels, in keeping with Bhutan’s position as a nation with a negative carbon footprint. © BIG INSPIRING PROJECTS 53
