Constructing a Sustainable Future #3

FINLAND The city making progress in its bid for neutrality HELSINKI. Reinventing the construction sector means transforming targets into concrete achievements. The city of Helsinki is a perfect example. While the Finnish capital has been pursuing climate policies for a long time, in 2017 the city set itself the target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. After working for four years to achieve this goal, Helsinki has brought forward its neutrality target from 2035 to 2030: a timeframe that allows everyone to understand “that we need to act now” emphasizes Deputy Mayor Anni Sinnemäki. Helsinki is thus the first city in Finland to have set a binding maximum value(1) for CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle of residential buildings. (1) The binding target value takes into account CO2 emissions from a building’s materials, the construction process and emissions linked to its use for 50 years, and sets a maximum value not to be exceeded for all these emissions. ©Valery Rokhin INSPIRING PROJECTS 79
