POLAND Exploring yesterday to innovate today MUSEUM OF POLISH HISTORY, WARSAW. Exploring the field of possibilities is essential to designing a building that combines respect for history, sustainability, aesthetics and comfort. This project, in the Warsaw Citadel museum complex, is a good illustration. The main challenge was to transcribe 1,000 years of the country’s history while meeting the demands of contemporary architecture. The use of marble, worked using six different methods, reflects the project’s exploratory approach. Opting for a minimalist, monolithic form, the building is clad with marble slabs in a variety of patterns, arranged in horizontal bands, symbolizing the strata of past times. WXCA was able to give careful thought to the building’s meaning and history, while taking into account the acoustic, thermal and visual comfort of visitors, as well as the building’s environmental impact. This earned it a place on the list of the “World’s Most Beautiful Museums in 2024” at the Prix Versailles World Architecture and Design Awards (France). © The Museum of Polish History.
